The band was engaged to parade with County Grand Lodge Glasgow (C.G.L.G.) to Glasgow Green to partake in the annual Battle of the Boyne Celebrations. Continuing with our military theme on uniforms the band substituted their American Marine drum corps Uniform for a newly purchased Guards division Corps of Drum style of Uniform.
The band has been associated with this style of uniform for many years now and outwith the military bands, this style of uniform is identified with the Black Skull Corps of drums.
The band had to work extremely hard over the last 20 months to raise the large amount money required to purchase these new uniforms. The cost of the new uniforms exceeded £50,000. The Drum Major's Uniform being the most expensive. The amount the band had to raise does not include our yearly travelling expenses or operating costs raised for the annual trips to Ulster. Add this cost of more than £18,000 and you can see we are not just playing at bands here; this is a way of life for us.
People outside the band community think the band has large amounts of money, especially if we can afford to buy such expensive uniforms etc; this is so far from the truth. The fact of the matter is ~we work hard: very hard indeed! As we have said before; not one penny has been given to the band by means of Council grants, Lottery Grants, sponsors, grant aid Etc.
All monies required were raised by our members, their families, friends and supporters of the band. So to all those involved with raising this monumental amount of money “WE THANK YOU ALL”
Back to the July parade, the band gathered on Finlay drive in preparation to march to the Evangelical Church to meet up with the members of the C.G.L.G. Just before we set off; everyone is tasked to ensure all uniforms are sitting correctly, the band Sergeant is busy checking the tuning of our new Flutes before the band sets off.
Everyone connected with the band is on a high and looking forward to an enjoyable day.As the band moves of to the Evangelical Church there is already a strong crowd in attendance following the band. A couple of the new younger members of the band are settling in well, considering it's their first main parade. Everything goes well enough from Finlay Drive to the church, we had a wee problem with some flutes not in tune, and this was rectified during the break at the church before we set off on the main parade.
The C.G.L.G and B.SG. head off to meet the main parade body in Bythswood Sq. On route to Bythswood the C.G.L.G stop at the war memorial in George Sq, to lay a wreath in remembrance of those brave men who gave their lives for their country. After the service we move off to join the rest of the parade in Bythswood Sq. So far the weather has been holding out, just a bit overcast. The main parade moves off at 10.45am and makes its way to Glasgow Green, as luck would have it; it starts to drizzle.
Once again the crowds have turned out in big numbers and stretch all the way from Bythswood to the Green itself. This always gives everyone a lift parading all the way to the park. On the return parade, everyone looks forward to coming out the park and heading up the High St, this year is no different; despite the rain which has got a wee bit heavier.
As we head up the High St, the crowds are still strong and still singing and dancing despite the rain. Everyone is still enjoying the return route as normal.
We have reached the Evangelical Church where the band completes the day by playing the National Anthem, after all that, there is nothing left to say but:
SAME TIME, SAME PLACE, NEXT YEAR
God Save The Queen.
